2 Wiring problem of the 2002 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 01/30/2015
2002 Ford Windstar sel with VIN 2fmza534x2bb28176, I am the third owner of this vehicle. The abs and traction control system is damaged and has a recurring warning when the engine is started with the abs / brake and traction control warning lights on. The person I purchased this van from (2nd owner) stated that he had all the recalls completed on this vehicle however he believed that the defect identified in Ford safety recall 09s09 for the speed control system has resulted in damage to the abs system computer and/or associated harness wiring or harness connections. He (2nd owner) did not keep the repair orders for any of the recall repairs so I do not have any records to review. I believe that the wire harness, related wire harness connectors and the abs system computer are damaged resulting from brake fluid leaking and/or corrosion related to the defect found in Ford safety recall 09s09. I believe that the Ford dealership that performed this recall failed to properly repair or identify collateral damage in the wire harness and abs system computer as noted in recall repair procedure. The vehicle is currently not repaired and the abs system is not functioning as designed (non-functioning), I believe this is a safety hazard. Current owner: jeremy taylor, 52 will rd, hendersonville nc, 28792. Jts_escapades@hotmail. Com.

3 Wiring problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 10/19/2014
After a little research, I found that this is a very common problem with Windstars. There is a switch (called the brake pressure deactivation switch) hooked to the braking system that detects when the brake has been pushed and stops the cruise control accordingly. Well… this switch is known to develop leaks, which allows brake fluid to run down into the wiring and cause a short. This blows the fuse which controls the speedometer, a/c, odometer, etc.

4 Wiring problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 06/22/2014
While investigating the 50 mph failure of the pcm module, and the ongoing off/on action of the abs module, I ran across what appears to be a mistake on page 43-3 of the fomoco "2001 wiring diagrams/windstar" manual (fcs-12255-01). I exchanged several emails, case # cas-4648613-l1x1r6 crm:03259000003405, with the Ford customer relations center about this matter until they told me to contact a dealer. I sent the questions to my dealer asking for correct information, but they haven't acknowledged my inquiry. What I suspect is all Windstar's on the road today may be operating with only one-half of the scp (j1850 pwm) network operational. Now that many of the defective abs modules are failing, are other Windstars in danger of engine failure at speed like ours? the two simple questions I asked fomoco are: 1) are you sure circuit 915 (data bus-) should be grounded at the abs module? 2) what is the proper termination for the Ford data bus (circuits 914& 915), 120 ohms, 650 ohms, 3k ohms, what and where?.

5 Wiring problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 06/09/2014
The brake pressure differential deactivation switch (scds) (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) over time develops a leak. This causes a short and a fuse trip, fuse #10 if the engine is on. This leak also causes brake fluid to wick down two wires to the abs brake module (2c219). The fluid accumulates on the (always on) power connectors for the abs brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. The fluid attracts moisture, road salt and leads to a fire when the fluid and moisture act as conductor between the hot leads and ground. This switch has been the subject of other Ford recalls, just not my Windstar van yet. My wiring harness when inspected was wet with brake fluid, including the connections and the inline fuses, which basically permits electricity to jump past the inline fuses and continue to heat up the wiring harness. The fuses bodies crumbled when inspected. Since most double side door vans are predominantly driven by large families, the possibility of multiple fatalities per vehicle due to a horrific death from being burnt alive is a valid point to consider. Most vehicle fires spread so fast that unstrapping multiple small children from restraint seats would take an inordinate amount of time, especially with smoke inhalation and the heat of flames to prohibit rescue. Thank you for investigating this.
6 Wiring problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 04/01/2013
I was driving my vehicle and the gauges in my instrument panel cluster started to go all over the place. The rpm indicator broke off against my gear selector indicator. Replaced instrument panel cluster and had to buy a new key(only had once key from previous owner) and reprogram both keys to new anti-thieft device built into said instrument panel cluster. There was no problems with any of the wiring coming to the instrument panel cluster either. When I asked my mechanic what had happened he said it was a common problem with this year, make and model and happened a lot. Also when I replaced the part another error came up that I was unaware of because of the defective instrument panel cluster. So this whole time I was driving the vehicle I had no real idea of the state of my vehicle because of this common defect. Very scary!!!! come to find out that it is another recalled part (abs relay) that I'm going to have to fill out another complaint form for. Its nice to know that my entire vehicle has a build-in defect that allows for complete negligence of the state my vehicle is in.
7 Wiring problem of the 2003 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 09/01/2011
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. The contact stated while driving 80 mph the vehicle stalled without any warnings. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who was unable to diagnose the failure but stated that it might be a problem in the factory wiring. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 99,000 and the current mileage was 104,000.
8 Wiring problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 07/18/2011
The abs and brake light began coming on intermittantly a couple of months ago. It seems that the abs ecu module is the problem as multiple abs codes were read. Now, two months later my cruise control no longer works. If you do the research online as well as in your complaint section for 2001 winstar it is an all too common problem. It seems to be a problem that was not addressed properly on an earlier recall by Ford (09s09) which included a scds wiring harness replacement only caused by brake fluid leaking onto wiring and causing a potential fire hazard. Many owners believe the fluid not only ran down the wiring continuing to run onto the abs connector causing parts to short out and fail and also onto the cruise control connector causing it to fail. I truly believe this is the reason all these abs modules are failing. . . It's amazing how many complaints with my same problem are on your website these are very expensive parts to replace (over $1000) plus labor. The absence of the abs system does cause braking problems and can cause the brakes to lock up and skid. . . This happened to me. . . Just missed having a wreck! the connector to the cruise is also being effected causing it to fail as well. I think Ford should be required to at least check these vehicle and replace these parts if they are found to be faulty before someone gets in an accident. They may have already.
9 Wiring problem of the 2002 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 06/10/2011
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Windstar. The contact received recall notice 09v399000 (vehicle speed control) and took the vehicle to a dealer to be repaired; however, due to a brake fluid leak it caused the wiring harness to burn. The dealer advised the contact that the wiring harness had not been covered under the recall; therefore, did not check that component when the recall work was performed. The manufacturer was aware of the failure. The current and failure miles were 145,000.
10 Wiring problem of the 2002 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 06/05/2011
2002 Ford Windstar, 153028 miles sat because of rear axle broke close to home. Got recall notice from Ford for axle. Contacted country roads Ford in new martinsville wv. They had van for couple months waiting for axle. Axle was replaced but no other recalls were done physically. The mechanic signed that all was done. I got in van, which sat for a couple weeks, attempted to stop at lite and no brakes. Pedal went to floor. Pumped brakes an grabbed e-brake to stop inches from the car in front of me. Took it home after filling master cylinder with fluitd. Found that it was leaking thru the switch itself. Brake fluid trailed to different connectors. Took it back to Ford. They did the recall for the brake sensor and the sub frame. 11s16. Now the engines reves to 2000 rpm when the steering wheel is turned and when its shifted from gear to gear at any given moment. Revs up at any time which is a hazard to anyone in or near the vehicle when operating at lites, in store parking areas. The wiring harness installed was manufactered 06-27-2008. Part no. Bw7t14a411a35nb CA. Diagonistic codes change when the battery terminals are removed, then replaced for resetting computer. The cruise control works when it wants to. Shuts off during driving. The uncontrolable engine revs is the most serious of the problems. Called country roads Ford again and they said it wasnt caused by anything they did for the recalls and that only 3 pretained to my vehicle. Having a different shop look at it.
11 Wiring problem of the 2003 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 04/05/2011
Vehicle passenger headlight would come on in the middle of the night by itself and now passenger headlight would not work on dim. They said there was a problem with the wiring harness. So I had to pay for them to take the same materials again. I'm deciding if I should cut my losses and sell. My husband said we should never have bought a Ford. I'm disabled and can't afford to be sticking this kind of money monthy into it.
12 Wiring problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 10/25/2010
The abs warning light on my 2000 Ford Windstar van has been coming on intermittently and staying on for some period of time (I. E. , years). Reported this several times to the local Ford dealership and they acknowledge that the light is on, but can never figure out the appropriate diagnostics as to what is wrong with the sensors or the abs system and they have been unwilling to replace anything. Even during the last recall (cruise control wiring harness issue) the mechanics at shults Ford of wexford, PA admitted that the light was on and wouldn't go off, and that they didn't know why, but they made no attempt to replace it. Lately, my light has been lit up more constantly and it seems to me that the braking distances are generally longer. I cannot ascertain if the abs system is even engaging or not, but it seems that Ford is really not too interested in this problem. I recently applied the brakes during a light rain in which the road was slick from oil/grime because it had not rained in some time, and I heard no evidence of the normal sound of the abs system. I wanted to submit this to NHTSA so that at least this will be documented in case I get into a serious crash as a result of a faulty abs system or abs sensors.
13 Wiring problem of the 2002 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 09/04/2010
The abs light continues to stay on at all times. Periodically, the brake light also lights up and simultaneously, the speedometer doesn't work. The brake light and speedometer malfunctioning occurs about once a month. I've taken my car into a Ford dealership to check the abs light. They say the entire module needs replaced, but there's nothing wrong with the car mechanically. The recall for the scds has already been performed on my car, but the abs light error has never been corrected. To replace the module, the dealership told me I would have to pay $1800. I have come to understand that there are many Ford Windstar owners who have the exact same problem and I believe that this problem is due to faulty materials or wiring. I have three children and one on the way and don't feel safe driving this vehicle without the proper safety features I was promised - including anti-lock brakes.
14 Wiring problem of the 2003 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 08/27/2010
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that the anti-lock brake module burned out on the vehicle and caused the fuse to burn out as well. The wiring harness burned and now the air conditioner and speedometer have failed. The vehicle had not been inspected at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage and current mileage was 123000.
15 Wiring problem of the 2002 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 07/01/2010
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that the abs and brake warning lamps were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that break fluids were leaking onto the wiring harness and as a result, they performed the repairs specified on NHTSA campaign id number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control). The remedy failed to repair the problem. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 135,000.
16 Wiring problem of the 2003 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 05/03/2010
It has an electrical problem. Needs wiring harness, needs front and real axle replacement. Dangerous. Alarm goes off at random. Won't hold charge. Steering wheel bearings are shot.
17 Wiring problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 12/08/2009
Regarding the 2009-2010 perform recall 09s09 of the speed control deactivation switch wire assembly replacement. It did not work - it never worked, nor did it solve the problem. Within 2 days of the installation the abs light came on again. To this date brake fluid is still leaking into the component. It causes my brake lights to stay on upon stopping and turning the car off - which if goes unnoticed, it drains the battery. To this date the cruise control does not work. And it has also reduced my safe braking distance. I have very low miles on the van - less than 81,000 miles - so it is not cause by heavy usage. Ford has failed to fix the issue which is the leaking brake fluid onto this wiring assembly. There are many Ford Windstars still in use that are experiencing the same problem. Ford should fix this issue of the leaking brake fluid onto the assembly wire. Replacing this wire assembly harness did not and will not fix the brake fluid leakage issue.
18 Wiring problem of the 2002 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 11/22/2009
The wiring to the master cylinder speed control pressure switch melted and caused a small fire which fortunately was put out. An extremely dangerous situation. Apparently brake fluid leaked from the master cylinder onto the switch. 2002 Ford Windstar.
19 Wiring problem of the 1997 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 11/10/2009
My Windstar gl wouldn't start. I replaced the range selector switch. When I restarted the vehicle I forgot the reconnect the brake pressure sensor wiring connector and the abs light came on. I tried to get the code cleared but no-one could access the code. I took the van to the dealer for a recall notice on the speed control system and had them look into why the abs light was on. I was told the abs module had quit and needed replaced. The module is $1500. 00 and $300. 00 to install. That's more than the van is worth. I searched online and found out many other Windstar owners are having the same problems. The cruise control system has also quit and the dealer rep. Tells me that the cruise control also goes through this module. With the possibility of fire it seems rather irresponsible for Ford to do nothing more than install a fusible link as a safety measure. I am looking into buying a used module to repair the cruise and abs. The failure is total. Neither the cruise control or the abs system works at this time.

20 Wiring problem of the 2002 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 08/24/2009
This is an update to odi number 10278659. The cruise control actuator switch was identified as leaking brake fluid by my independant auto repair shop. They replaced the "cruise control actuator switch" part number yf1z 9c888 ab at a cost of $34. 56 for parts and $22. 50 for labor. They also replaced the wiring harness that connects to the switch. After this was done, the cruise control started to work consistently again. The abs light and brake warning light still come on intermittently. Sometimes I have noticed they go on after I hit a bump. Once they go on, they remain on for the duration of the journey (until the car is turned off).
21 Wiring problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 08/16/2009
Drove from albany, new york to virginia beach on August 15-16, 2009. As we pulled into our destination, abs light and brake light went on, o/d light flashed, speedometer and odometer readings went to --------, and we smelled smoke. Was able to drive car to beach Ford in virginia beach where we were told that brake deactivation switch was leaking fluid damaging wiring harness and many other components. Was told that wiring harness part needed was obsolete. Husband was shown burned up wiring harness and abs unit by mechanic. The wiring harness plug was melted into the abs unit. These parts remain in the car, unplugged. We have been told by Ford that there is no such recall for our vehicle, although we have researched on the internet and believe this to be untrue. We have spent $500 getting the leak repaired so we could drive home, and an additional $200 from our local dealer to tell us that we need to spent $3000 more in order to repair the problem. Currently, we have no speedometer and odometer, abs light and brake light are on due to burned parts, o/d light flashes.
22 Wiring problem of the 2003 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 08/07/2009
Leaking brake fluid, cruise control switch caught fire, melted abs ecm wiring connector, brake light on after brake service, abs brake light stays on, fuse had to be replaced.
23 Wiring problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 07/26/2009
Speedometer, odometer, a/c and cruise control stopped working while driving. Abs warning light on. Found #10 fuse blown in fuse panel. This fuse is related to all of the functions described above. When researching the possible cause of the blown fuse, found information describing a possible defective switch on the underside of the master cylinder. The switch was in fact leaking brake fluid into the harness plugged into it. The harness ended at the abs control unit under the vehicle approximately under the driver's seat. Brake fluid was found at this site as well. As a temporary repair, the switch was removed and a plug installed into the master cylinder. Also, two 40a fuses were removed from the under-hood power distribution box to disable the abs system. As a result, the speedometer, odometer and a/c functions returned to normal. However, abs will not function until the issue of the leaking switch, wiring harness, and abs controller are addressed.
24 Wiring problem of the 2003 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 07/01/2009
2003 Ford Windstar. Abs and brake warning light come on intermittently. Seams to be mostly when wet roads, but has occurred on dry days also. Took to local Ford dealer and was told abs module had a lot of error codes and the wiring connection looked damp. Mechanic put dielectric grease on the connection, but I received no info on the error codes.
25 Wiring problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 06/08/2009
The contact owns a 2000 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that all of the accessories connected to the accessories relay continue to operate, even when the key is removed from the ignition. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign id number 00v351000 (electrical system:wiring:interior/under dash), although the failures were identical. The failure mileage was 130,000.
26 Wiring problem of the 2003 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 06/01/2009
My wire in my 2003 Ford Windstar not working my electric doors do not lock and my back control panel is not working and I checked my fusebox and a fuse was burned out so I replaced in and it blew out again so some thing is wrong with my wiring and I do not know what to do now.
27 Wiring problem of the 2002 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 04/27/2009
Brake pressure switch leaked brake fluid causing failure of cruise control, speedometer, and odometer. Red brake light and yellow abs light on constantly. Had repair done at local Ford dealer. Paid $200. 00 for analyzer and $700. 00 to replace wiring, cruise control module and speedometer module. Brake and abs lights are now off. Second day out of the shop the abs and brake lights come on intermittently. Estimate #700. 00 I am hoping the NHTSA rules on this defect as a safety hazard and orders a recall.
28 Wiring problem of the 2002 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 04/25/2009
My wife was driving our 2002 Ford Windstar and noticed smoke coming from under the hood and it smelled electrical. My 19 year old son noticed the smoke coming from the wires under the master cylinder. They called me and I suggested removing the wires from the brake pressure switch. He did but they were extremely hot. I did some online research to find a problem with Windstar pressure switches and wiring catching fire. I am glad a fire didn't start, but it could have. I would like to see Ford include 2002 Windstars in their recall.
29 Wiring problem of the 2003 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 03/10/2009
Loss of brake fluid (problem # 1) melted brake deactivation switch (problem # 1) brake light on after brake service. 30 Wiring problem of the 2002 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 02/24/2009
Smoke and terrible plastic burning smell inside the cabin of my 2002 Ford Windstar van. Taking my van in to a repair shop in February, I had to have the abs module and cruise control module and all associated wiring replaced, due to some evident fluid leaking of some kind (I believe they said break fluid). My cost was $1,030. 98, and the repair shop said this could happen again (????). They thought this issue may warrant a recall. I do have my parts they replaced.
31 Wiring problem of the 2003 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 02/21/2009
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that the wires from the overdrive switch in the transmission were burned and the fuse was inoperable. The vehicle became engulfed in smoke while driving at an unknown speed. Smoke was rising from the instrument panel and the vehicle would have caught fire if the contact had not turned off the engine. The dealer stated that there was no recall on the wiring harness; therefore, the contact would have to pay for the repair. The failure mileage was 96,000. Updated 03/12/09. Updated 03/16/09.
32 Wiring problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 01/28/2009
Brake pressure differential deactivation switch leaked brake fluid down wires to the abs module, shorting the module and causing a brief but non-sustained fire with resulting smoke and melting of abs module and wiring harness components. This disabled the speedometer, odometer, abs system, cruise control, and activated abs lights and brake system lights. Appears to have occurred while driving and smoke and smell was present when parked in garage after occurrence.
33 Wiring problem of the 1998 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 01/17/2009
Brake fluid leaking from cruise control reset switch, fluid dripping on wiring and controller switch for transmission. I am very concerned about fire potential with the brake fluid dripping on electrical wires and contacts that have constant 12 volt source. This same design has caused deaths do to fires. . . . .

34 Wiring problem of the 1999 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 11/04/2008
The contact owns a 1999 Ford Windstar. While driving approximately 35 mph, the contact noticed smoke coming from the front end of the vehicle. After closer inspection of the vehicle, he noticed that the wiring harness leading to the master cylinder was melted. The failure led to a small fire under the hood. His model was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 07v336000 (vehicle speed control). The contact still has possession of the melted wiring harness. The vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer to determine the cause of the failure. The failure and current mileages were 162,000. Updated 12/02/08. Updated 12/03/08.

35 Wiring problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar
Failure Date: 09/04/2008
My 2001 Windstar was giving off intermittent brake light warning. After about 1 week of this going on and I couldn't find out why this was occurring, my van had the abs light, brake light on constant. My overdrive light was flashing continuously. My speedometer, odometer and air conditioning stopped all at once. Blown #10 15a fuse. I looked into see what has gone wrong and noticed that the brake pressure relief switch that is connected to the bottom of the brake master cylinder was defective and leaking brake fluid onto the transmission range sensor and into the wiring harness that contains the wires for the brake pressure switch. This accumulation of fluid into the wiring harness has caused a short. I caught this fairly early for if I had not, this surely would have caused a fire. I have replaced the brake pressure relief switch and have not traced the short as of yet.
